Valentine's Day is just around the corner and we spent our Saturday afternoon getting into the spirt by baking up our favorite sugar cookies. We used our go-to, favorite recipe for the cookie dough and frosting, and added a splash of Valentine's cheer by drizzling the heart-shaped cookies in shades of red, creating an easy ombré effect when displayed on a platter.
We also purchased this heart side-of-cup cookie cutter from World Market, because who doesn't love a freshly baked cookie with a cup of warm coffee or hot chocolate?
Sugar Cookies + Creamy Glaze Icing Ingredients Sugar Cookies 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar 1 cup butter, room temp. 1 egg 1 tsp vanilla 1/2 tsp almond extract (lemon is good also) 2 1/2 cups sifted flour 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp cream of tartar
Creamy Glaze Icing 1/3 cup butter 2 cups powdered sugar 1 1/2 tsp vanilla 2-4 tbsp hot water
Directions 1. Beat sugar and butter. Add egg, vanilla and almond extract. Beat until light and fluffy. Combine dry ingredients and add to batter, blending. Divide dough into 2 balls, flatten dough between waxed paper and refrigerate at least 3 hours.
2. Roll dough on light-floured surface to 1/2 inch thickness. Dip cookie cutters in flour. Cut and place on lightly greased cookie sheet.
3. Bake at 375 degrees for 7 to 8 minutes. Do not over bake. Let cool before mixing up icing and decorating.
4. To create the creamy glaze icing, Melt butter and stir in sugar and vanilla.
5. Add water one tablespoon at a time until desired consistency.
