Our dining room is the setting of many special celebrations in addition to memorable everyday moments. We wanted the setting to portray my casual and modern style, while being inviting and the perfect place to entertain. Before Newlyweds when we moved into our new home nearly four years ago, we had little budget to decorate and furnish our home with new purchases. We were still using our small, four-person table from our apartment and builder-grade lighting was installed in both the dining room and the kitchen. The walls were a dark beige and felt dark and dirty. We wanted to make the room our own while ensuring it was practical for the entertaining we loved to do.
After months of planning and shopping, we completed the makeover in one weekend. We chose a soft mint shade (Sherwin Williams – Mint Condition) as the backdrop for the kitchen and dining room. It brightened up the space while giving off a cozy and casual vibe. We made a no-sew roman shade for the back door using a colorful, ikat-patterned fabric and chose gray- and white-striped drapes for the large window in the dining room.
The centerpiece of the dining room is a large, modern espresso table and contrasting white parsons chairs to accommodate the gatherings we host for our friends and family. Instead of purchasing an expensive buffet table, we opted for a simple cube bookcase and added wicker storage baskets to hold our many serving and entertaining pieces. The top of the bookcase is the perfect place to both store and display our Reidel wine glasses.
We chose a simple, sophisticated drum shade pendant lamp to cast a warm glow over the table and installed a modern, brushed-nickel pendant light over our kitchen sink and island. A Parsons herringbone-printed clock hangs on the small wall next to the sink.
To accent dark cabinets and countertop, we installed a white subway tile backsplash. This was an easy and inexpensive addition to our kitchen, and serves as the perfect backdrop to the many buffet lines that grace our countertops.
And of course, the entertainment hub of our household wouldn’t be complete without a bar cart to hold all the ingredients for refreshing cocktails. We styled the cart with vintage gold cocktail glasses, passed down from my great aunt.
Now the dining room is my favorite space in my house and serves as the perfect backdrop for family birthday parties, intimate dinner parties, game nights and quiet dinners for two.
